Alicante airport, or to call it by the official name, Alicante-Elche airport, greeted its 10 millionth passenger yesterday who aptly happened to be a Brit! British holidaymakers far outnumber any other nationality arriving there.

Keith Porter flew in on a Ryanair flight from London Stansted and was greeted by Laura Navarro, Deputy Director of the airport with flowers and a free VIP pass the access the lounge.

Ryanair have also presented him with a voucher for 2 return flights - the low cost carrier has many regular routes from UK airports and recently overhauled its image with the public. Although living in Almeria he finds that with the frequency of flights into Alicante it more convenient to fly there.

It is an extraordinary volume of passengers, especially in the popular holiday months of April to August which beat figures consistently from the previous year. Throughout 2013 the airport recorded 9,638,835 passengers and by the end of tomorrow, the last day of 2014, the figure will be about 10.05 million.– and forecast to rise even further during 2015. The airport is used by millions of holidaymakers who head to Benidorm every year and served by virtually all the low cost carriers out of the UK. It is the sixth busiest airport in Spain and among the top 50 in Europe.

These predicted figures are backed up by a recent UK survey carried out by Travel Supermarket on holiday plans, which confirmed that Spain remains the most popular foreign holiday destination for the Brits. According to the report, a typical British holiday for 2015 will be a 10 day trip to a Spanish beach resort – and Benidorm continues to be one of the favourite destinations.
