If you want to see tradition and custom, then Spain is a great place to be. Last night the first of the two annual Moors and Christians parades took place in Altea and it was the turn of the Christians - each year they alternate who goes first.

 

Thousands turned out to watch the procession, with those living along the main route out on their balconies, suddenly very popular with friends and family! Plastic chairs lined the route – costing €10… that´s a steep rate of inflation since last year so unsurpring that many chose to bring their own folding ones!

The first float appeared on time, at 8pm and continued virtually non-stop until just before 11pm. This year saw lots of children and babies taking part, dressing up in fancy costumes – the girls in particular were in their element. They certainly start them off as they mean to go on here – with loud music and explosions.

The elaborate costumes, which are hired out, are paid for through fundraising events during the course of the year and can each cost several hundred euros. Each float or group was followed by a band – there was also a number of horses galloping up and down.

Tomorrow – Monday, is the turn of the Moors parade, which again starts at 8pm. Many of the roads are closed and have diversions so if driving allow extra time. If taking the tram get off at Garganes, which is directly behind the Town Hall and where the parade takes place… and don´t forget your camera.
