bare bumWhat was once deemed a family friendly resort is now being tarnished because of a minority that behave recklessly. Rowdy and unruly stag and hen groups have been the subject of numerous newspaper headlines but now many resorts across Spain have decided enough is enough.

thong on promMagaluf – considered the most raucous called time first, declaring hefty fines on those that exhibited anti-social behavior. Only last month a 90 strong group of Brits were banned from a mass pub-crawl and a long list of new bylaws were introduced to clean up its shameless image. This was followed by many others including Seville, Marbella, Mojacar, Ibiza and now Benidorm!

pants on zebraFollowing complaints from local residents, opposition councilors have been putting pressure on the town hall to take action. Sadly as always it’s the few that do the damage, tarnishing all Brits with the same brush. You can almost feel the undertones of disapproval from some Spanish when they realize that you are British.

hen groupWe also feel the same way, embarrassed by their actions but funny how you don’t get the same bad behavior with other nationalities… only us! I think that they leave their brains on the runway then the sun frazzles what was left. But it’s actually the male stag groups responsible for the offensive outfits, walking about with bare bums on display in areas where families and young children are. I have yet to see the same of a hen group. Most will just wear a veil and printed group t-shirts.

signSo what is the town halls response on this … put up posters and banners in the ‘problem’ areas with the tagline “Enjoy & Respect” – Please be considerate and respectful to the rest of the people; Please do not dress in offensive clothing, this is a place for families as well; Please use the bins and recycling containers.

enjoy respectSadly I doubt that this will have any effect on their behavior – they come here for one reason and one reason only – to have fun whilst getting drunk on cheap booze.

Are they really going to stop and read it? Unfortunately, the economy depends on their business so a ban as well as being unenforceable is also foolish. We do need you but please, think about your choice of outfits and don’t be too disruptive or disrespectful – otherwise have fun!

I love it watching the Stags and Hens having fun on Calle Gerona. Nowadays they take along mum/dad, auntie/uncle and other older family members who try to keep them in check. Not as bad as some make out.

You must have been wearing dark glasses with a white stick, check out some of the bars on the Levante sea front. The ignorant drunken Brits spill out all over the promenade, not the place to take children. I spend over 6months of the year in Spain and have witnessed its downhill trend in the last 15years fortunately I rarely visit Benidorm.

Quoting Steve Davis:
We all know what these places are like and been like for yrs..why would you take a family there ? Horses for courses.go somewhere else.

Thousands of people are avoiding the place, we go to Greece now. As much money as hen and stags bring into the town at weekends it will never replace the 7 or 14 night holidays. When the hotels start losing money and complaining then the council will do something about it.

Thank goodness I live just above the old town. I love Benidorm but these louts damage the whole of Benidorm. I stay with my Spanish friends and go to Spanish bars

Do you not think people should take initiative and understand that their behaviour is antisocial? There have been times staying in family hotels in Benidorm and I have had apologise to the local staff for the behaviour of brits, that’s even before they have had a drink. On the whole, I see Brit’s as rude, intimidating and patronising to the Spanish. Saying no in the hospitality trade is a killer. And it’s more of a case that the locals put up with it to keep business going.

Benidorm is much more than then stag and hen do pubs of the kevabte beach front, the strip and 'english square' being spoken of here as if it is the whole resort. I'm currently here with my mum and dad in their 60s70s and are sat at a bar having a quiet drink watching the sunset over the beautiful day. We haven't seen a sex show, not been subject to pickpockets or prostitutes and certainly haven't seen guys with arses hanging out. Like any resort it is about what you want from it and what you seek out. There are kids here playing on the playgrounds, on the beach and with responsible families too and yes there is a late night entertainment area if you choose to visit there, but surely anyone as a parent should know not to take kids there! Why let a few idiots spoil your holiday - take some responsibility and find the areas suitable for you.
