What is probably one of Spain’s most bizarre traditions took place on Tuesday evening – ‘Entierro de la sardina’ or the Burial of the Sardine!
Yes a huge plastic sardine was carried through the streets of Benidorm's Old Town and taken down onto Poniente beach.
It was a late night affair, with the procession not reaching Dove Park until around 11pm.
Despite the time, spectators lined the route and the local police were out in force... as is normal at such events.Mourners followed, dressed in black and carrying wreathes behind the sardine.
It was ceremoniously burnt on the sand and a spectacular firework display followed – because as we all know, no occasion in Spain is complete without fireworks! Lent now begins, lasting 40 days and there will be numerous brotherhood parades from the San Jaime church at the top of the Old Town in the week commencing April 6.
