Benidorm was filled with the sound of marching drums and bagpipes this morning as the Royal British Legion (RBL) Spain District North officially launched its Poppy Appeal with a parade and wonderful show of community spirit.
The parade, led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, made its way along the promenade to warm applause from spectators who gathered to watch and show their support. The stirring music created a memorable atmosphere, bringing together residents, visitors, veterans and supporters for this important occasion.
Standards were proudly carried on display, representing the Royal British Legion and the values of remembrance, service and comradeship. Veterans marched alongside fellow Legion members, with a particularly special presence from 94-year-old Korean War veteran Headley Sleep.
Another veteran was 94 year old Raymond Barber who was proudly wearing his original sailor uniform which he donned over 70 years ago... absolutley incredible! Their attendance served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women. We salute you gentlemen...
Following the parade, the official launch ceremony took place with the Mayor of Benidorm, Defence Attaché from the British embassy in Madrid, British Vice Consul amongst other officials in attendance recognising the importance of remembrance and the work of the Royal British Legion in supporting the armed forces community. All money raised here remains in Spain, supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Royal British Legion volunteers were also out in force, selling poppies and collecting donations to support the Poppy Appeal. Every poppy worn and every contribution made helps the Legion continue its vital work supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families.
The morning was a wonderful demonstration of community spirit, with the public showing their appreciation through applause and generous support for the volunteers.
The Poppy Appeal is an opportunity for everyone to remember those who have served, honour those who never returned, and support those who continue to live with the consequences of their service.
Every poppy counts. Every donation makes a difference. We will remember them.
