On Monday they were filming in front of the Sol Pelicanos hotel – which had been renamed to the Solana for the occasion with a specially made up fascia, although many actually believe that is the real name.

  • The new series of ‘Benidorm’ will be hitting our screens tonight, Monday 11th – the eighth. I don’t think that anyone imagined it would be the roaring success that it has become when the first episode was filmed back in 2006 and aired on ITV in February 2007. Many had no idea who any of the cast were – only vaguely recognizing the likes of Johnny Vegas or Steve Pemberton, but that has certainly changed over the years and they are now all household names. Actor Jake Canuso has played the sexy Spanish barman from the very first episode and probably the most recognized out of all the cast.

  • Since the very first series of Benidorm was aired on ITV at the beginning of 2007, it has become such a hit with the UK viewers that Tiger Aspects are currently filming the 5th series in the town. The key characters have remained since the beginning and central to that are the loud dysfunctional Garvey family. Mike is the lazy, work shy, uncouth head of the clan who does anything to save a pound or two...

  • Have you ever wondered where the name Johnny Vegas came from – it’s not the one he was born with, that’s Michael Pennington, incase you never knew - but his stage name. Well, one of his favourite films growing up was 'Grease’ – starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. The two John’s in those names isn’t the answer but Johnny Casino & The Gamblers – the musical group performing at Rydell’s National Dance-Off was his favourite character. It nearly did remain Casino until a night out with mates, when they decided upon Vegas and so JV was born.

  • Tony joined the cast of Benidorm in series 4 and was such a hit with the audience that he's back again in series 5 where he plays "uber camp hair stylist" Kenneth. I caught up with him at the pool side bar of the Sol Pelicanos hotel during his lunch break whilst filming during the week. But Tony was more than familiar with the hit series as he had originally auditioned for the part of Mick Garvey!

  • The growing compensation culture, prevalent in the UK has spread – and evidence is emerging on a weekly basis of illicit practices occurring here in Benidorm. Spanish hotels are hitting back at so called ‘unscrupulous British lawyers’ for enticing holidaymakers to make claims against them, actively encouraging people to claim for anything ranging from thefts to food poisoning. They offer to act on their behalf on a ‘no win no fee’ arrangement - professing to win thousands of pounds in compensation. These so called reps, usually those in their early 20’s mingle with hotel guests around the pool, dressed in swimwear so as not to attract attention from hotel staff.

  • I met up and had a coffee at the Hotel Presidente with the lovely Crissy Rock yesterday afternoon, her home when she is here in Benidorm. Unfortunately, she is jetting back on a Jet2 flight to Liverpool today, using her entire 22kg luggage allowance she showed me, having had a fruitful shopping spree that morning. But she´ll be back here in November, in time for the Benidorm fiestas and looking forward to the British Fancy Dress day she told me – but hasn´t quite decided on her outfit for this year yet.
