5Proposed changes to the town´s mobility regulations could spell the end of tandem mobility scooters, raising questions for couples and holidaymakers who rely on them. Following an initial unanimous vote on 26 October by the town council to amend its mobility regulations and prohibit scooters designed to carry more than one person, the changes are designed to address growing safety concerns and provide greater protection for pedestrians.

MadgeMobility scooters have become a familiar sight throughout Benidorm – a craze which boomed following the Benidorm series which saw “Madge” upon one. For many older visitors and people living with disabilities, they offer independence and the freedom to enjoy everything the resort has to offer.

The presence of children sitting on laps or two on a single scooter raises obvious questions about safety. Such practices already breech existing rules, nevertheless, we still regularly see this going on.

This was very much evident at the recent launch of the Poppy Appeal, which saw a 94 year old Korean war veteran being driven upon a double scooter.

For such couples, the proposed change could have significant consequences and it is not clear if the wording of this proposal means an outright ban for them too.

For couples who currently use double scooters, clarification cannot come soon enough. We shall await the final outcome.... there now comes a 30 days public consultation period.
