As from 1st January 2013, the Spanish Government is to raise taxes on cigarettes - BUT only on the cheaper brands! Seems bizarre.... The PP Parliamentary group in the Senate has introduced a minimum tax to apply to cigarettes, cigars and rolling tobacco. The tax increase will add an extra 18 cents onto the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes, but may end up somewhat higher.

The UK Government is looking to introduce minimum pricing for alcohol as part of a drive to tackle problem and binge drinking, which has become a major issue especially among the younger generation.  But for some reason it predominantly affects the British youngsters - take a look around Benidorm, you rarely see any other nationalities drunk and out of control!

The Spanish Government is considering changing the law to grant a residence permit to foreigners who purchase property in Spain over a certain threshold in order to stimulate the housing market. Initially the  amount of 160,000 euros was proposed but rumblings are that this is too low and 500,000 euros is being considered.

Its certainly true what they say about the Brits and their pooches - which was evident as the Showboat in Benidorm was packed to the rafters for the first ever fundraiser in aid of Costa Blanca Dog Homing this afternoon. Not only did the residents and many of the donors turn out in force, but some of Benidorm´s best loved entertainers did too - giving their much needed free time up

New speed limits proposed on Spanish motorway

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

The governing PP party is proposing to increase the speed limit on toll roads to 140 km per hour and has filed a motion to debate it in parliament. The main reason for this is that traffic on toll roads, for which there is a charge, has fallen drastically since the beginning of the crisis and many are now on the brink of bankruptcy!

Last day of the Benidorm Fiesta

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

The torrential rain and wind caused some disruption to the festivities yesterday, but the bars were still full - albeit inside! The traditional "humor parade" had to be changed... rather than floats parading down the streets it was relocated to the giant tent on the Town Hall Square, which unfortunately meant that some of the penyas could not take part as they were too big.
