8pm and already packed!
Well it must be said that the Spanish certainly know how to party! Last night was the eve of San Juan - and beaches along the length of the Costa Blanca were packed with revellers.

I joined the masses on Albir beach, armed with the obligatory cool box and chairs and joined hundreds of others. As expected parking was a little difficult, especially as the beach road was shut to traffic. Everyone was driving as near to the beach as possible and off loading their picnics before trying to find somewhere to park.

Very thoughtfully Albir council had erected a huge projection screen to broadcast the football match - Spain versus Nigeria, much to the delight of all the men! It was easy to tell when Spain scored a goal from the cheers and clapping even if you weren´t actually watching.

As midnight approached, most of the crowds started heading towards the shoreline - the eager and brave ones in their swimming gear at the front whilst the majority just ready for a quick paddle - I include myself in the later group surprisingly.

Just as the clock struck midnight the obligatory fireworks went off... for no fiesta in Spain is complete without them! It wasn´t a very long display, remember these are times of austerity but still a very nice show. Then the traditional bonfire was lit by the local firemen - who stood guard, ready with their hoses. During the burning the firemen turned their hoses on the spectators to join in the fun, drenching them much to their delight - with the children squealing one moment then shouting for more!
Brave ones jumping over the fire!
Then as the fire died down the firemen raked up the remains, hosed down the surrounding sand and allowed people to jump over it - always on hand with the hoses spraying water. My goodness, you couldn´t in a million years imagine that happening anywhere in the UK! It was so lovely to see that Spanish traditions are still be upheld and not banned.
The party atmosphere continued well into the early hours and I bet by 8am this morning the beach was lovely and clean again, ready for the days sunbathers and holiday makers.
