Busy queues again at Ryanair... lets hope so
Budget Irish airline, Ryanair must be feeling the loss of business as much as El Altet Alicante airport since cutting back flights over the ongoing dispute. They have sent a letter to AENA, the airport operator in which it proposes to create new routes and also to increase the number of flights from April 2013... sounds like great news. However, there are terms to this generous proposal, obviously!  The carrot is IF, and only if they they allow the airline to embark and disembark all passengers on foot and remove the mandatory use of air bridges.

Currently, El Altet allows loading and unloading by foot to about 50% of Ryanair flights. It therefore seems a somewhat peculiar argument for AENA to say that air bridges are necessary from a safety point if they already allow half of the flights to go by foot. In my eyes its either safe or not, so by allowing half it appears it must be and the motivation is obviously money on AENA´s part.

Passengers arriving at El Altet
Through a statement, the company said that this offer would represent an increase of 600,000 passengers going through El Altet next year and so can help to recover much of the decline in passenger numbers suffered throughout 2012. They pointed out that they operated safely and successfully in Alicante for more than five years before the opening of the new terminal.

They have asked that the airport authority responds to this offer by November 15th so that they can plan its operations for next Summer. The proposal would create or sustain up to 600 jobs at the airport at a time of high and rising youth unemployment. The current unemployment figures for Spain´s under 30´s is 50%, so AENA should think very carefully and not worry about "loosing face" - jobs are at stake here.

Ryanair did not disclose which routes they would create or re-instate, but many of the ones axed from the UK this year could be back on... which would be great news for those planning on holidaying in Benidorm! Lets hope its a positive outcome for everyone...
