Following a "successful trial",  budget carrier Easyjet are to launch allocated seating on all its flights from November. Easyjet found that 70% of the customers questioned preferred the allocated seating during the trial period. The airline said that it will make more money on allocated seating than it does on speedy boarding, for which they currently charge 12.75GBP per passenger per journey to enable them to be among the first on the plane.

If you wish to chose your seat, there will be a sliding scale of prices. For prime front row or emergency exit seats which give you extra legroom it will be 12GBP; next front 4 rows (row 2-5) will be 8GBP and 3GBP to reserve any other seat on the plane. Passengers that do not pre-book their seats will be allocated one at check in, whether at the airport or on-line.

I spoke with the press department at Easyjet to clarify the point and she confirmed the above. My worry was that those who chose NOT to pay for a seat would have to queue at the airport to be allocated a seat. One pleasant surprise was that the computer will allocate seats together for those families that chose not to pre-book, obviously dependent on availability.
Easyjet check in at Alicante - all using online now?

Speedy boarding that has been offered on Easyjet was limited to 30 passengers per flight, whereas the potential now for extra revenue is far greater as it is predicted that far more passengers will opt to pre-book their seats. This is especially true of families, who wish to sit together with their children. I suppose the one positive to all this is that it will allow more time for people to browse in the shops rather than stand in a queue at the boarding gate, so the duty free shops should see an upturn in takings.

A point of interest for some people with children is that Easyjet allow unaccompanied minors on from the age of 14.... both Ryanair and Monarch do not allow under 16´s to fly alone.  However, the booking procedure is not very clear..... you have to book the minor as an adult as it does not allow you to make a booking for a child under 16 without an adult. This is particularly handy for parents who wish to pack their little darlings off to their grandparents for some of the long Summer holidays... like me!
