Dave (in black) and Ted - owner of the Union Jack Bar
Next Sunday, 19th August the Union Jack Golf Society will be hosting their 3rd anual fundraising golf tournament in aid of Emaus - an organisation which run 5 children´s homes along the Costa Blanca.
The event is being organised by Dave, Secretary of The Union Jack Golf Society based at the Union Jack Bar in Benidorm, which is located in the Rincon de Loix next to the Dynastic hotel with the help of Tony from the Bed Centre in Calpe.

I popped down to the bar yesterday to find out more about what Dave had planned for this very special day and how everyone can do their bit to help this very worthwhile charity fundraising event. Dave had just come back from the Villaitana Golf course where the club play every Thursday and the venue for the  charity tournament next Sunday, which will be played on a superb 18 hole course.

The day will begin at 8am with a "Shotgun start" Dave told me... a term that all golfers will understand - and looking at my puzzled face explained its basically an early start! A staggering 80 players will be participating made up of 4 teams of 20 - when it comes to fundraising for children everyone wants to take part Dave told me. The 4 teams are: Union Jack Golf Society representing the UK, Alfaz/Albir International Golf Club which will be captained by Miguel Torres, Villaitana Golf Club representing Spain and Team Europe - a group of 20 international golfers.
Breathtaking views of Benidorm skyline from golf course

There will be plenty to do for non players with raffles, a tombola and auction to keep you occupied throughout the morning and a delicious bbq lunch at 12 noon for which Ted of the Union Jack Bar is kindly donating ALL the food - he also sponsors the Golf Society... what a kind and generous man - his heart is as big as his girth!

Each of the 18 holes have been sponsored by a local business with the money all going towards the big total at the end of the day. The sponsors to date include: Cool fm, Little Belfast Pub, Gills Rumba, 20/20 tel.com, Ace of Spades, Alicante Private Transfers - who are generously sponsoring 2 holes, Pride Construction, Drop Inn Bar, Scottish Vicki´s Rumba class and last but not least, us at Benidorm All Year Round.

Prizes for raffles, tombola and auction have also been generously donated but Dave is on the look out for even more - so if you´d like to be part of this very special fundraising event please contact him via the Union Jack Bar. So far he has accumulated a superb range of prizes from Black Tower Finance in Calpe, Million Dollar Hole, Coast2Coast magazine, Union Jack Bar and Ex-Pats Cash & Carry in Villa Joyosa.... there are lots more but you shall have to come on the day to see and be amazed at the generosity of local business people.

Always busy on the sun terrace
But the fundraising starts beforehand with a car boot type sale at the Union Jack bar on Thursday 16th August, which will be an all day event. Dave and Ted have asked if anyone has any new unwanted gifts or donations to please drop them off at the bar and invites everyone to come along - there will be no prices on any of the items and they will leave it up to you to make a hopefully lavish contribution... remember it is all for the Emaus Children´s Home so dig deep!

The Union Jack Golf Society has 60 members in the golf club and between 20 to 30 people play every Thursday at the Villaitana course. For those that are here on holiday but fancy a round, Dave told me that he will gladly arrange it. To play 18 holes with a buggy prices start at only 35 euros... and if you don´t have your clubs then don´t worry, Dave can hire out a set for only 10 euros - they have 13 sets available. Pop into the bar to speak to him or contact him via the website:

Good luck to Dave and Ted and everyone else involved... I will certainly be there next Sunday and hope to see as many of you as possible.
