Fancy dress dayThe event of the year took place in Benidorm today – the British Fancy Dress Day and boy what a day it was. This year certainly appeared to beat all expectations as the entire length of Calle Gerona was jam packed, from Western Saloon all the way past Jumping Jacks. It is also the first year that roads have been blocked off to traffic –not just Calle Gerona but all the roads running off it too, with National and Local Police out in numbers.

Benidorm mayor at fancy dressThe costumes were astounding, with so much thought and effort going into them and even the Mayor, Toni Perez came to have a wander along with Security Councillor Lorenzo Martinez and President of HOSBEC, Antonio Mayor – I am fairly certain they haven´t ever experienced anything quite like it.

gold mermaidsMany groups had themes - there was everything from police, doctors and christmas crackers to the flintstones, mermaids and roman soldiers.

Age was no barrier either, as old and young mingled together enjoying the electric atmosphere of it all, comparing costumes and probably making a note for next year!

flamesIt is estimated that 40,000 people attended and the Town Hall have said that they want to sit down with the organisers to collaborate on security, logistics and properly promote the event at Tourism Trade Fairs.

Hallelujah... the penny has finally dropped on how much of an important event this is for Benidorm and in particular all the businesses here, particularly the bars and hotels.

white feathered ladiesThe entire area was a rainbow of colour and there was an incredible party atmosphere throughout the entire afternoon, with no sign of any trouble. The bars and clubs all competed against each other as to who could play the loudest music and all had mobile bars outside on the street, where the beer and drinks flowed.

rambosThe partying will have gone on well into the early hours and there will most certainly be a few sore and delicate heads in the morning. If you haven´t yet been then it should most definitely go onto your to do list – you just won´t believe the magnitude of it all.

pink ladiesIam pretty sure that it is actually the biggest fancy dress party in the world – perhaps I will contact the Guinness World of records for next year and see if Benidorm can set the bar.Virtually anything goes so don´t be shy - they can be homemade or bought costumes... it´s all about having fun.

orange coal minersOn Friday there will be a giant FREE paella outside Sinatras in The Square - something of a tradition which the owner Manolo puts on. He is the man responsible for the Fancy Dress having started it 23 years ago and been offering the paealla as a thank you to everyone for coming and supporting Benidorm.

boys in nappiesAlso with the England v Spain football match, broadcast live from Alicante, the bars will once again be full – possibly not quite like today but for those die hard football fans it will be a great place to be. Most bars will be showing the match, which kicks off at 8:45pm Spanish time.
