Football certainly brings out the passion and virtually every bar in Benidorm was broadcasting the England v Spain Women´s World Cupvfinal today. The giant poolside screen of the Marina hotel was one of the best vantage points, attracting both the Brits and Spanish, including players from Benidorm´s male and female football teams.
Many spent the 90 plus minutes in the pool – understandable in the 30 degree plus heat scorching down. Press and television stations set up their cameras and tripods at strategic points, ready to snap the jubilation as and when throughout – although it was in the 29th minute when the only goal of the match was scored.
Even the mayor, Toni Perez and director of Visit Benidorm, Leire Bilbao attended, cheering on the national side. Although an air of disappointment, the celebrations from Spanish supporters was well received by the Brits and absolutely no sign of any trouble across the resort was reported.
Well done to all the ladies who have certainly made the beautiful game even more so and encouraged a new generation of players.
