The countdown to Christmas began this evening following the official turning on of the lights in the town hall square – renamed Christmas Square for the duration of the festive period. An explosion of gold and silver confetti cascaded down and fireworks signalled the start of festivities.
There are numerous fairground type rides and activities dotted around, including the very popular ice rink, which will all remain in place until January 7 – the day after 3 Kings. Skate hire is €8 and gloves are compulsory – if you forget or don´t have any you can purchase them from the kiosk.
There are also a number of stalls where you can purchase a variety of things - many aimed at children plus food stalls where you can get drinks, snacks and a real Spanish favourite, churros - either with lots of sugar sprinkled over them or dipped in chocolate!
Next week there are 2 bank holidays here – Wednesday 6th which is Constitution Day, the day that Spain became a democracy following the death of the dictator Franco and quite a big deal here – remember many shops will be closed.
The second is a religious one ‘The Feast of the Immaculate Conception’ and usually there will be special church masses. Many will take Thursday off work making it a 5 day break and likely that the resort will be extra busy with many Spaniards arriving from Madrid.
