The town of Alfaz del Pi hosted the "Los Antiguos" European Classic Car club this morning - outside the Casa de Cultura. Around 70 classic cars were on display in the square for all to admire - and there were certainly plenty of admirers. The club President Willy Claeys was delighted with the turnout and told me that enthusiasts had come from as far as Torrevieja and Valencia to take part in the rally.

According to a report compiled by the CEHAT - Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation, hotels are losing in the region of 10 million tourists per year because of "home exchange" sites. This has always been an issue but in recent years has escalated, mainly due to the internet and people looking for cheaper accommodation.

There was much hype when it was announced that top UK chef Gordon Ramsay was looking to film his popular and somewhat controversial television series "Ramsey´s Kitchen Nightmare" here in Benidorm. Rob Gillies, one of the assistant producers came out in April to recce for potential "establishments" - but unfortunately, there were no takers in Benidorm.

Last week Terra Natura Wildlife park in Benidorm welcomed a new member to its extensive family - a Siamese crocodile.This particular breed is one of the most endangered species of crocodiles in the world and sadly already extinct in some regions. It is officially listed as "critically endangered" on the ICUN Red List.

The Spanish holiday island of Majorca are bringing in a ban, or rather fining people for wearing only their bathing costumes away from the immediate beach or poolside vicinity.The regulation is being introduced this month following continued complaints from bars, shops and restaurants of having to serve "under-dressed" holiday-makers, which will apply to both tourists and locals.

The annual Medieval Market opened in Benidorm yesterday evening, this year located in Parc d´Elx (Dove Park) at the start of Poniente beach and the bottom of the "Paseo de la Carretera" - or walking street as it is better known. Tragedy struck at La Cala Finestrat beach yesterday which resulted in the death of a swimmer. In a press release from Finestrat they state that an unidentified male, of around 60 years of age was recovered from the water after nearby police were alerted that someone was in difficulty in the water. An ambulance was on the scene within 3 minutes of 112 being alerted and resuscitation was attempted, but
Yesterday morning, British Consul Paul Rodwell was in Benidorm participating in a joint presentation organised by the Spanish National Police and HOSBEC - the Hoteliers Association for hotel staff and representatives of the travel industry based in Benidorm. The aim was to discuss how to keep tourists safe and how to deal with problems when they occur.Often hotel staff are the first to deal with any issues and in the majority of cases it will following a bad experience.

The participants of the 2014 "Benidorm or Bust" charity car rally arrived safe and sound in Benidorm yesterday - which is more than could be said for some of the cars! Of the 92 cars that entered 5 died on route, which is pretty good going considering the condition of some. This is the 4th successive year that the event has taken place - and the brainchild of Steve Turner from West Yorkshire.
