  • The coastline is littered with beaches and hidden coves and if you like exploring and getting away from the mainstream, then head to La Olla in Altea - past the main Altea strip and towards Altea Hills. The easiest way is by car, just drive along the N332 and it will take about 15 minutes, unless you choose a Tuesday when the market is on – the number 10 bus only goes as far as Altea centre and it´s quite a walk from there. Alternatively, take the tram to Olla de Altea then walk down towards the sea.

  • If you fancy a day out from Benidorm, head out in the direction of Altea/Calpe and just past Altea Hills – with the iconic golden domes of the Russian Orthodox church you will see a sign for Mascarat. Here you will find “Greenwich Marina” – a lovely area with bars and restaurants dotted around, where you can enjoy a drink while admiring the yachts and boats bobbing up and down.

  • The Chiringito, an almost essential part of Spanish culture, is basically a wooden shack on the beach selling cold drinks, beers and snacks. They are normally located on the more remote beaches and coves, where there aren´t many bars or restaurants and despite the rather rustic and basic facilities, are loved by both locals and tourists.Once sitting outside, the only sounds you will hear are the waves lapping the shore and the chink of ice cubes in your glass!

  • Benidorm Island, one of the resorts iconic landmarks and visible from both the Levante and Poniente beaches is a popular tourist attraction, visited by thousands. A quick 15 minute boat trip from the port in the Old Town makes it ideal excursion – but scandal now surrounds the bar and restaurant on the island. It transpires, that no license or permit was ever granted despite it openly trading!

  • If you are looking for somewhere else to visit and done Altea already, head out in the opposite direction and try Vila Joyosa. Resembling a Dulux colour chart, you will probably find every colour except white – the total opposite of Altea Old Town. It´s a visual delight and will have you reaching for your camera.
