The new Benidorm Wine – “Señorio de Benidorm” was officially launched at the Town Hall on Monday evening, the result of a two year project undertaken by local sommelier Javier Castillo, Winemaker Gaspar P. Tomás and Bocopa - the Alicante bodega which will produce the wine.
The red crianza is a blend of Monastrell and Syrah grapes which have been aged for 100 days in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels, producing a rather heady 14 per cent alcohol content. It has been fermented at a low temperature to extract a unique bouquet and is a deep cherry red colour.
But what I found truly amazing was the thought that has gone into the actual bottle! The glass has been etched with the Benidorm skyline – featuring the iconic Intempo “M” building, skyscrapers and Benidorm Island with the words “Un lugar para volver” – A place to return. 70,000 bottles have been produced – sadly when I asked they couldn´t tell me the proposed retail price and said next week it will be released. It will be a lovely souvenir to take back home and I am sure that many local bars and restaurants will stock it – there were plenty of people attending the presentation, my guess about 300.
As well as being a very tasty wine – we all had the opportunity to sample some after the official presentation, a minimum of 1% of the sales will be donated to “Doble Amor” – a local charity that helps and promotes people with disabilities which is reason enough to buy a bottle or two to take back home with you I´d say!
