If you are stuck for something to do on a warm and balmy evening why not head up to the Old Town. Benidorm has in some people´s minds acquired a reputation of solely being a stag and hen destination for those wanting nothing more than sun and cheap booze. Up to a point that is the case, particularly in the Rincon de Loix area, but if you head up to the Old Town you will think you are in a completely different part of Spain.

Schools are nearly out – well they already are here in Spain and preparations are underway for the annual family holiday. Suitcases are coming down from the loft and being packed and un-packed a number of times. For families – or rather mothers, travelling with young children it really is an arduous task. What to take, what to leave – in fact, most of the luggage allowance is generally taken up by the smallest member of the family!

When it comes to food, some words are synonymous with one another: Italy – Pasta and Pizza, UK – Fish & Chips; India – Curry and without hesitation, Spain – Tapas and paella. Ask anyone for the best place to try tapas in Benidorm and undoubtedly you will hear two words – Tapas Alley! Tapas Alley is located in the heart of the Old Town, directly off the main pedestrianized walking street- Passeig de la Carretera, on Calle Santo Domingo, although you will hardly ever hear it being referred to by that name.

Data and roaming charges coming down in Benidorm

Good news for Brits coming away on holiday to Benidorm – or anywhere across Europe. As of tomorrow, data roaming charges are set to be slashed by more than half the current extortionate rate, which mobile users are being forced to pay. With the current craze of social networking, many are constantly wanting to update their statuses and post pictures on Facebook or Twitter. But until now, the cost has been unfairly high and the EU has finally capped the roaming charges for using your mobile in another EU country. The EU commission has already agreed that roaming charges should be abolished by the end of 2015, but this has yet to go through the final stages of being signed off. This would mean it would cost the same amount to make a call or send a text from Levante beach to Blighty as it would from within the UK.

Refreshingly non PC comedian Tony Scott manages to pack the house out every night in Stardust, where he is exclusive and the resident comedian. Many have varying views and opinions of his somewhat controversial near to the knuckle jokes, but the fact that there is standing room only on virtually every night speaks for itself! He is easy to spot, with his distinctive ponytail and brightly coloured shiny shirts and comes out singing, leaving newbies wondering if they have come to the correct venue – but before long, they realize that they definitely have.

Once again, the Brits have been screwed by the French! The 6 day French air traffic controllers strike, which started yesterday is causing untold misery to millions - not only for the holiday makers but also the travel industry in general. Airports across the UK, as well as here in Alicante resemble a warzone, with passengers lying wherever they can find a space. It is worse for those already on the plane - yesterday some passengers were stranded for 3 hours on the tarmac, not an enviable situation for families with children. Flights are being delayed and cancelled with passengers left in the dark thanks to the selfish actions of so few - merci beaucoup!

A brand new Iceland supermarket opened in Benidorm this morning - relocating from near the La Marina shopping centre, (which is technically in Finestrat) to the Rincon de Loix side of Benidorm. Many of the British ex-pat shoppers are already familiar with the location as it is next to the "Pink House" - which is used in the filming of the ITV Benidorm series and almost across the road from Benidorm Palace.

Police crack down in Benidorm´s infamous "Square"

Benidorm police are starting to crack down on establishments for not complying with regulations - in particular with reference to noise pollution. The hospitality and nightlife business is extremely important to the economy of the resort, but there needs to be a balance with the rights of the residents too - not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. Many Brits come on holiday to Benidorm specifically because the alcohol is so much cheaper and the town is rife with Stag and Hens groups, something of a controversial issue with family groups.
