Benidorm’s newest venue to open is Sinatra’s Premium – a brand new Dinner and Show Bar, located in the Rincon de Loix opposite the Hotel Levante Club. The opening party took place last night, where Manolo proudly showed off the months of hard work that it took to achieve the spectacular result. The 550 sq mt venue has been finished to a very high standard and he knows exactly what does and doesn’t work - having a number of other clubs and bars in the area. But this is different to his other venues in that it will not just be serving drinks but snacks and food throughout the day and ultimately a sit down meal with show in the evenings.

Benidorm's sunbed scramble

Reminiscent of a scene from Wacky races or a Carry On film, a video uploaded to You Tube of the daily sunbed sprint at the Flamingo Oasis hotel here in Benidorm has caused much amusement worldwide. It has even made headlines in the daily papers – but rest assured, sadly this is not an isolated incidence, which only occurs there! The Brits even put the Germans to shame, historically renowned for bagging sunbed at the crack of dawn.

Segway - The fun eco way to see Benidorm

The Segway originated in America but is now popular worldwide – and Benidorm is no exception. Unlike the mobility scooter, which you sit on and is almost out of control here – the Segway is a 2-wheeled electric vehicle which you stand on... hence doesn't appeal to those that hire mobility scooters purely out of sheer lasiness and as a cheap mode of transport, therefore making it difficult for the genuine users. You will see Segways around the resort but be careful who you rent them from. Just as there are counterfeits with everything these days, be warned that there are also inferior Chinese imitations about.

The great exchange debate

Despite repeat advice on changing money, many still continue to use the Bureau de Change at an airport – which offer by far the worse rate possible, almost tantamount to robbery in my eyes. As an example I was at Alicante airport this morning, where there is exchange kiosk beside the rental car section as you exit the baggage reclaim area. On enquiring about today’s rate the response was £1 gets you €1 on “smaller amounts” without elaborating on what signified small! The exchange rate in Benidorm is 1.155 today … at most places.

Alcohol ban on Jet2 flights

In a bid to try and tackle disruptive behavior caused by alcohol, Jet2 have announced that they are to stop selling alcohol before 8am across all their routes. The ban will come into force from Monday making them the first European airline to introduce such a measure – but will it realistically make any difference? It is nothing new to read a flight being diverted midway due to a passenger becoming disruptive – with the plane being met authorities to escort them off.

Flying with children?

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Low cost carrier Ryanair have announced that from September 1, customers travelling with children under 12 will have to purchase a reserved seat to ensure that they are seated together. But they have reduced the fee from €8 to €4 and the child will be allocated a seat for free. By law children under 12 have to be seated with their parent or guardian, but a number of families take a chance on being randomly allocated seats together, free of charge.

Benidorm's golden beaches

One of the main attractions to Benidorm are the stunning golden sandy beaches – and along with the fantastic weather, helps to keeps Benidorm at the top of the holiday destination list for the Brits. Unlike other holiday destinations, Benidorm is blessed with 5 separate sandy beaches, in addition to a number of hidden rocky coves – so there is something for everyone. Each beach has its own personality and attracts different people, but you can be assured that each one is meticulously maintained.

When in Benidorm, make sure that you don’t miss the opportunity to go and see the new show – I-CONS, at Benidorm Palace. Without fail, they somehow manage to achieve the unachievable every year, improving on what appears to already be a spectacular show. There are not enough adjectives to describe the latest extravaganza – thrilling, high energy, passionate, exciting… all those things and more. You certainly won’t have the chance to grab 40 winks during what can only be described as ç from the moment the show begins.

Post Brexit prices in Benidorm

Following the Brexit vote, many have been pessimistic about the impact the drop in sterling will have on Brits going on holiday, with some saying it will cost more now. Granted the exchange did momentarily dip after the result, but I honestly don’t think you will find anywhere in mainland Spain as good value as here in Benidorm. A report by The Post Office compared prices across a number of popular European family destinations and although prices in the Costa del Sol have gone up, that certainly cannot be said of the Costa Blanca.

Benidorm's missing attraction

With the season pretty much here now, the beaches are starting to fill up nicely… except yesterday and probably again today, as the grey clouds circle and rain threatens. Although no comfort to holidaymakers, it is a welcome relief to residents, but rest assured that the weather app shows the orange balls will be back by the weekend. The beaches are probably the biggest assets that the resort has to offer, particularly for families – but one thing that is missing from them this year are the floating pontoons and pedalos.

Bullfighting - a dying Spanish "tradition"?

There will be little sympathy over today’s headlines, that a ‘matador’ – or bullfighter was gored to death in Teruel (near Valencia) yesterday. The 29 year old was pinned to the ground by the 87 stone bull named Lorenzo during a fight watched by his wife – but opponents of the barbaric sport took to social media, rejoicing at the news. Although a “tradition” which goes back century’s here in Spain, there is a growing backlash to have it outlawed.

Yesterday the Benidorm cast karaoke fundraiser took place at The Comedy Club - organised by Derren Litten, the series creator and writer.

As soon as it was announced, there was a clamber for tickets, which following last years masive queues they decided to pre-sell at the Presidente Hotel... with a limited number on sale at the door. It was a night not to miss for fans of the series - and they turned out in droves.

Parking restrictions are now back in force across all blue zones in Benidorm – reinstated on Friday July 1. Some roads – including Calle Gerona, Calle Cuenca and Calle Lepanto had them temporarily suspended over the low season, causing slight confusion for motorists as the main Avd Mediterraneo was still in force. From now only white bays are free.

Following the success of last years Benidorm cast ‘Karaoke Night’ – writer and creator Derren Litten has organized a second fundraiser, which will take place this Saturday – July 2 at The UK Comedy Club.

Last year they managed to raise over €13,000 – not bad for a few hours of fun and as filming is in its final phase Derren asked cast members if they would once again take part. He was delighted that not one of them hesitated and they are giving up their end of shoot fancy dress party to take part… so hats off to them all.

Tickets will be available from 6pm tonight at the Presidente Hotel reception desk.
