An unusual lunch in Benidorm

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Much like they have hair and beauty academies for training, yesterday I discovered that they also have one for the catering and hospitality industry - and right here in Benidorm. No I haven´t decided on a change of career - following my performance on Come Dine with Me I think it would be a rather short lived one!

Benidorm 6 crew at Neptunes

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Yesterday the crew and cast were filming down at Morgans Tavern - which is the fictional "Neptunes Bar" in the hit comedy series. You couldn´t miss it really - the Primoti and generator vans are the main give away! Well that and the crowds that are gathered at the entrance, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the cast as they make their way into the green "rest tent" in between takes.

Finestrat Town Hall have launched a campaign to promote itself  - a giant billboard measuring 3 metres high by 8 metres wide welcomes visitors in several languages including English and Russian to the town and directs them to the sandy beach. Many people do not even realise that La Cala comes under Finestrat, assuming that it belongs to Benidorm.

The Benidorm series film crew were out on location this afternoon - and there was no mistaking where they were, due to the mass of people! They had taken over one of the bars on the Levante front and turned it into a beach bar.The first give away sign was the taped off side road and then the subsequent arrival of the Primoti vans and generator!

Benidorm Bull Ring comes to life

On Friday, the Benidorm Bull Ring once again came to life and was used for the purpose it was built. Bull fighting is a very controversial and sensitive issue, particularly for the Brits - who are largely a nation of animal lovers. I have always been of an open mind on the subject - what right do I have to criticise what is a deemed a national tradition and part of the heritage of the country I have adopted as my home.

This Easter weekend, Mendoza wine bodega in Alfaz del Pi are offering a special wine tasting "experience"! I popped by this afternoon and couldn´t believe the number of people that had the very same idea, there must have been nearly a thousand people there! Tomorrow is the last day to take advantage of this opportunity - it was a 3 day event which offered you the chance to sample some of the best wines that this local bodega has top offer.

Benidorm´s architectural achievements

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Yes, you did read that correctly... although it is not something you would normally associate with the town. Benidorm Town Hall, that modern glass and steel structure is ten years old - it was opened back in March 2003. Most new building that are being constructed now, especially in Benidorm are sky scrappers, going upwards, but instead this one is horizontal.

When is a Euro not a Euro?

The creation and introduction of the single currency, which is shared by 17 member states was a major step towards integration. It was heralded as the way forward for businesses who would often loose out on fluctuating exchange rates and seemed a god send for holiday makers, who could keep their leftover Euros from their holiday in Greece and use them again later in the year for that break in another Euro Zone country.

Benidorm 6 - Lights,Camera,Action!!! Take 1

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Filming began today of the hugely anticipated 6th series of the ITV hit comedy series "Benidorm". The cast have been arriving over the last week - and with the UK weather as it is, I bet they couldn´t have timed it better if they had tried. The sun is shining down and the sky is blue with not a cloud in sight - a good omen I think!

Bolton Stag boys live it up in Benidorm

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Earlier in the year I wrote about a group of Middlesbrough Hens coming to Benidorm - well to balance it up, yesterday I met a group of Stags on a 4 day break from Bolton. Benidorm is the most popular European destination for Stag & Hen groups - and now with the financial problems facing Cyprus, will probably get even more popular as those that chose the resort of Ayia Napa look to other destinations.

Hand luggage security warning

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

When traveling I would say the majority of passengers are security conscious and ensure that any hold cases are securely locked before being checked in. There have been reports of items going missing out of checked in luggage and so we are generally advised to carry valuables with us in our hand luggage.

This lunchtime, I attended The Royal British Legion Benidorm and District dedication of a brand new standard (flag) at a special ceremony held at Cuidad Patricia and conducted by the Revd Canon Peter Edwards. This is quite an achievement for the branch as in the last few years numbers had dwindled drastically but under the guidance of Branch Secretary Pamela Dawson Tasker, membership has grown to surpass the 50 mark.

Last night the Valencian region went up in smoke ... literally, as the Fallas were lit!It was the grand finale and climax which marked the end of the 5 day fiesta. A years worth of hard work was reduced to a pile of ash in minutes - its amazing how quickly they burn.I travelled up to Valencia - the home of the Fallas.
