Bernabe Cano - La Nucia´s long serving Mayor

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

La Nucia - my home town which neighbours Benidorm, holds a record that any town in Spain would be proud of – they have had the same Mayor for the last 12 years. Bernabé Cano has been voted in for the last 3 elections and his PP party has the majority of seats on the council - so apart from his dashing good looks he must be doing something right.

Surviving on low pay in Benidorm

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

The Spanish Government is looking to freeze the minimum wage in 2014 at 21.51 euro per day, which works out to a mere 645 euros per month!  They will be consulting with the trade unions and employee organisations and make a final decision later in the year - but how on earth can people survive on so little. With rent probably swallowing a hefty chunk of that it´s no wonder so many young are heading to the UK to look for work.

Following the successful Moors and Christians parade in Altea last month it is now the turn of Benidorm to put on the glitz. Albi Senior is one of the most talked about comedians on the Benidorm circuit - you certainly can´t miss him in his distinctive Union Jack attire. I met up with the man himself for a coffee and my first question was "is there an Albi Junior then"? He laughed as he explained how his name came about -  as he finished his show his parting catchphrase was "I´ll be seeing ya" ... it took me some time for the penny to drop...

Altea Moors parade 2013

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

It was the turns of the Moors parade last night which started according to Spanish time keeping - late! The 8pm publicised start was actually nearer to 9pm, but then I should think that people would probably have been more surprised if it had been on time. The delay intensified peoples excitement and once the procession began it was certainly worth the wait. The detail of the painted faces was absolutely stunning
