Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Rio de Janeiro is traditionally regarded as the capital of carnival celebrations, with the most spectacular and extravagant costumes you are ever likely to see. But Benidorm also has its own annual parade, which will take place in the Old Town next Saturday, 6th February. The date is dependent on when Easter falls, which this year is early, March 27th - Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

The new controversial bike lane on Avd Jaime I in the Old Town is dividing opinion among neighbours, businesses and users. The bright red lane, which has only just been completed, runs down the middle of the road – even going straight through a newly constructed roundabout. But the Councillor for Transport claims that the centre of the street is the safest place for cyclists…

Winter Blues in Benidorm

Considering that the weather in the UK is very cold and that many places are covered in snow, we are fortunate that in Benidorm the thermometers are still in double figures. However, even here temperatures have most certainly dropped over the last week and today are hovering at around 13 degrees – but with a crisp blue sky. It was the fiesta of Sant Antoni today – the Patron Saint of Animals and many churches held blessings after the Sunday service. The Ermita de Sanz, behind El Cisne rastro saw a multitude of four legged animals, from pooches, cats and ferrets to horses, budgies and multi coloured pigeons!

Benidorm does 5 Star luxury too

The ITV hit comedy series "Benidorm" and Channel 5’s “Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun” give the impression that Benidorm is suited solely to those looking for a budget break. But the resort is not just full of All Inclusive hotels serving copious quantities of cheap booze and eat as much as you can buffets as portrayed on the television at the moment – there are many upmarket hotels, swanky restaurants and culture available here too! Perceptions of Benidorm are changing, and much of the impulse behind this appears to be coming from the businesses themselves.

Benidorm Series 8 starts tonight

The new series of ‘Benidorm’ will be hitting our screens tonight, Monday 11th – the eighth. I don’t think that anyone imagined it would be the roaring success that it has become when the first episode was filmed back in 2006 and aired on ITV in February 2007. Many had no idea who any of the cast were – only vaguely recognizing the likes of Johnny Vegas or Steve Pemberton, but that has certainly changed over the years and they are now all household names. Actor Jake Canuso has played the sexy Spanish barman from the very first episode and probably the most recognized out of all the cast.

Last night the traditional Three Kings parade took place in Benidorm – centred around the Old Town. It was hard to decide who was more excited out of the thousands of children or Spanish pensioners! This was most evident when the sweets were thrown out to the crowds from the passing floats and it really was handbags at dawn, with each scrambling and elbowing each other out of the way.

Benidorm ER’s Dr Torres

Fly on the wall documentary series Benidorm ER followed holidaymakers and expats who found themselves sick or injured and needing medical attention while in the resort. Made by Blakewell North for Channel 5, film crews were based at the private Hospital Clinica Benidorm where they shadowed the medical team in emergency and subsequent follow up treatments. But not all cases required a trip to the hospital – Dr Torres at the Centro Medico dealt with many non-emergency cases and referrals.

Millions visit Benidorm every year – and the Brits are among the largest percentage. Hotels are reporting 95% occupancy over the Christmas period, with many domestic tourists coming from the capital Madrid and other major Spanish cities. But surprisingly many Brits pop over to Benidorm on daytrips from other resorts. One lady who knows this better than others is Cathy Mac – a tour guide based in Torrevieja.
