The Benidorm fiesta finally came to an end today - Wednesday, with a grand float parade through the streets of the Old Town. There were more than 50 floats taking part and each and every one was spectacular. In comparison to last years parade you could tell that financially things are definitely improving - the floats were a lot more extravagant and lavish with costumes to match.

If you fancy a day out of Benidorm why not hop on the tram and head to Alicante. The newly electrified track makes it an easy and pain free way to get about – far easier than trying to drive then attempting to find a parking space, for which you´ll have to pay.

As visitors approach Benidorm they cannot fail to notice the striking twin gold towers of the InTempo building which dominate the Benidorm skyline. Located on the Poniente side of the resort they even tower over the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala– however, at night they disappear into the abyss!

One of the most popular bars in Benidorm has to be Tiki Beach on the Levante front. Whenever you pass it is virtually always packed to the rafters, with people spilling out onto the road. Some people pass judgment on those having fun – but today I spoke to one lady who cannot speak highly enough of either Tiki Beach or the clientele! The lady in question is Marilyn Rogers – Social & Membership Secretary of the RBL Benidorm branch.

Today I travelled up into the mountains to Relleu, the next village after Finestrat and visited a special unit which is home to 24 mentally handicapped adults. The unit is set in 10 hectares of land – which is slowly being regenerated by a team of volunteers, headed by Tony Grande of The Calpe Bed Centre, to who I take my hat off and have the greatest of respect. The setting is so peaceful and beautiful, although rather challenging to find as it is tucked away on the outskirts of the village. Initially the unit was built to house young offenders and rehabilitate them, but the villagers caused uproar at the prospect and it never got off the ground. Eventually the unit was handed over to a charity and it has become home to those that many often forget about – whether consciously or not, as it is easier to pretend that they do not exist and get on with our busy lives.

WHEN IT comes to drag shows in Benidorm, Miss Coco Chanel is often referred to as the "Queen of Visual Comedy" - and it´s not hard to see why, performing an amazing 12 costume changes within a spectacular one hour show! The man behind the many faces of Coco is Colin Brown – a funny, energetic and extremely talented artiste. He performs a full mime comedy drag show – with emphasis on the mime as he readily admits his voice would empty a room in 10 seconds flat!

THE NEW 10 euro bank note went into circulation this month, with improved security features intended to make it more difficult to counterfeit. The new 5€ and 10€ notes will continue to circulate alongside the existing one and no date has yet been given for the expiry – so don´t worry if you keep them from your previous holiday! Many will be heading out to Benidorm and digging out unused euros from previous trips – all will be gratefully accepted!

So the curse of rowdy and reckless Stag & Hen groups is not just confined to Benidorm I see! In an attempt to change the image of Blackpool, the tourism boss Graham Cain said that "Stag & Hen parties should go somewhere else", suggesting Manchester and Liverpool as alternatives! However, unsurprisingly following a backlash from businesses associated and reliant on the tourism industry, he quickly retracted his statement and said he meant that "unruly behavior and inappropriate dress" should be clamped down on as it is putting off visitors to the resort.

Yesterday Alfaz del Pi celebrated International Day at the Poly Deportivo Sport Centre, with an estimated 3000 people attending the event. Every year the occasion gets bigger and better and the sun shone throughout the entire day, attracting a record number of visitors.

According to a Winter Sunshine report carried out by the Post Office, Spain, Bali and Portugal have been crowned best value destinations for Winter Sun.....which comes a no surprise to us here! Apparently the place to avoid if you are looking for value for money is Dubai – where a glass of wine can cost more than 7 GBP! The price of alcohol here in Benidorm is most definitely a great pull for many, where a pint can easily be had for 1.50 euro or even 1 euro if you look – especially during the low season.

Brian the Bear has become somewhat of a celebrity in Benidorm. He was bought by Jacqui Birch – owner of Alicante Private Transfers with the intention of donating him to a children´s charity. However, instead she decided to use him to help raise money for children by fostering him out – what in incredibly novel idea!
