The show stopping picture in today´s Daily Mail “Wish you weren´t here” showing a packed Levante beach makes it sound as if they had just discovered something new. Im actually a little dubious that it´s a current picture, especially as this year’s pedaloes are white and orange and it is a library picture from Getty Images! However, this is nothing new to us who live here – the beaches, in particular Levante are packed like that every Summer.

Alicante airport is following suit of many UK airports – implementing a charge in the departures drop off zone, which will come into effect from tomorrow – Tuesday 21st July. Up until now it has been very lax and many people awaiting the arrival of passengers have parked there for a considerable time – officially it was a 5 minute drop off zone. But be warned – no more!

Altea´s hidden gem – La Olla beach

The coastline is littered with beaches and hidden coves and if you like exploring and getting away from the mainstream, then head to La Olla in Altea - past the main Altea strip and towards Altea Hills. The easiest way is by car, just drive along the N332 and it will take about 15 minutes, unless you choose a Tuesday when the market is on – the number 10 bus only goes as far as Altea centre and it´s quite a walk from there. Alternatively, take the tram to Olla de Altea then walk down towards the sea.

Servigroup - Flying the flag for Benidorm

Benidorm has always been a favourite holiday destination and with the Foreign Office directive not to travel to Tunisia in addition to the financial woes in Greece, will probably see many more head this way over the next couple of months. There is much being made in the UK press about Spain now on red alert – most of this is just scaremongering… everyone is on red alert! The UK is on the same terror alert yet you don´t see people fleeing – London is still full of tourists. Wherever you are in the world, you sadly need to be vigilant and sensible – times are changing.
Benidorm is as safe as any other resort – the police are always quick to respond and be aware, they all carry guns. If you ever come across a road check – which is rather common here, the trafico police even have machine guns and aren´t afraid to use them either!

"Oh Solomillo" comes to Benidorm

Restaurants are in abundance around Benidorm – but finding good food is very subjective and personal. The rise of All Inclusive packages have resulted in many restaurants struggling and there is talk at the Town Hall of banning any further ones opening, such is the impact on local businesses – whether it is just talk time will tell. But quality and service will always ensure that the good ones triumph and succeed. One which certainly stands out is “Oh Solomillo” which opened its third branch earlier this year.

As part of an ongoing initiative, the Alicante Consulate team, headed by Vice Consul Lloyd Millen chaired a focus group meeting with British ex-pats in the town of Alfaz del Pi yesterday. The aim is to visit the Top 10 towns with the highest British expatriate communities within the district covered by the Alicante British Consulate – but as Lloyd amusingly mentioned, it is in fact the Top 11 as boundary changes during assessment would have knocked out one which had already been visited!

The night market "Les Nits del Castell" up at the Mirador in Benidorm Old Town has started - and will be on until the 15th September. The Mirador is home to probably the most spectacular view of Benidorm - you can see both the Levante and Poniente bays from there. It is a very popular tourist spot and a great place for an evening stroll - with plenty of bars to enjoy a drink while taking in the view.

Everyone knows of, or about, the British Square in the Rincon de Loix – but did you know that there is another heading into the Old Town? Nestled more or less behind Burger King on the Levante promenade, it is a delightful square with some great traditional British bars and cafes for those that are missing the creature comforts of home. You won´t find loud music or flat screen TV´s blaring out football or other sporting events here. It is a quite corner which attracts Brits by the dozens, where you can sit down and relax in a peaceful tranquil environment – ideal if you are on the beach and need a break.

Juan Carlos Valderrame, Deputy President of the Regional Government came to Benidorm last week and met with the Mayor, Toni Pérez, the new Security Councillor Lorenzo Martinez and members of the police. This is in addition to the ten beach police. With last weeks beach massacre in Tunisia at the forefront of everybody’s mind, will it reassure people coming here to see a more prominent police presence on the streets and beaches I wonder?

The traditional San Juan fiestas took place across Spain – and last night, the eve of San Juan, many headed to the beaches to celebrate as is customary. Benidorm, La Cala and Albir were packed with people, partying into the early hours. Up in Alicante the streets were adorned with hogueras – monuments like they have during Fallas time in March, which were burnt on the streets.
