Europe´s tallest hotel - Gran Bali in Benidorm

Did you know that the tallest hotel in Europe is located here in Benidorm? The Gran Hotel Bali is in La Cala, at the far end of Benidorm and stands tall at 186 metres – it is certainly prominent on the Benidorm skyline. Walk along the length of the Poniente beach and it then turns into La Cala beach – many think that it is all Poniente, then towards the end you will see the imposing Bali hotel. It is a fair walk and if you want to be partying in the heart of the Rincon then probably not the best choice – but if you are after a relaxing and laid back break, then this should certainly be on your list of possible contenders.

Benidorm is Spain´s third largest tourist destination – after Madrid and Barcelona and contributes 0.5% to the national GDP, which is a significant amount considering the size. However, surprisingly – or even shockingly, Benidorm is NOT officially classified as a "tourist destination".

If you like dressing up then Spain, and in particular Benidorm, is definitely the place for you. Hardly a month seems to go by without some sort of excuse to raid the dressing up box – and this phenomenon appears to have rubbed off onto the Brits too. There is one fiesta after another throughout the year- and obviously no occasion here is complete with fireworks!

"El Faro" - the lighthouse in Albir

If you enjoy walking, and I don´t mean from bar to bar, then this area must have some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes within the Costa Blanca. The promenade on the Levante beach front is popular with many, as is the walk to The Cross - but if you want to try something a little more challenging then I suggest you head out to Albir. You can catch the number 10 bus - only about a 15 minute ride and a 1.50€ fare, but culturally and visually about as far removed from Benidorm as you can get! Albir definately isn´t a party town - if you want late night drinking and clubbing then stick to Benidorm.

Benidorm nightlife

One of the attractions to Benidorm is the fantastic nightlife on offer - there is something for everyone regardless of age. Whether you are looking to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of one of the many tribute acts, or just relax with a drink in hand while listening to the lapping waves on the beach, Benidorm is the place for you. Luckily the children in bars fiasco seems to have died down - something that was worrying not only those coming over on holiday but more so, the bar and club owners. It was NOT a rule that they had made up but one that was being enforced in a few situations by police from the Generalitat in Valencia. No-one is any clearer on the ruling but children are being allowed into the majority.

Cruise the Med aboard a private yacht

Pulling into Alicante harbour

A yacht conjures ideas of billionaires in the south of France sipping on the finest champagne while being waited on hand and foot. But why should this level of luxury be limited? Not having come up trumps on the EuroMillions I wondered whether I would ever have that opportunity – but as luck would have it, last week I stepped aboard our very own private yacht in Alicante for an afternoon of indulgence with family and friends. The Alma – rather like pets, all boats have names too, lives in Alicante harbour and is moored virtually in front of the Casino Mediterraneo.

With the somewhat questionable British weather this Bank Holiday weekend, holidaymakers are flocking to Benidorm in their droves. With the central heating going on in many UK homes it is no surprise to hear that figures released by comparison site "TravelSupermarket" show a 164% rise in the number of Brits heading this way.

Day Trip to Denia

With the bright lights, cheap beer and alluring beaches of Benidorm, the coastal resort of Denia looms in the shadow of its more popular cousin. However, 80 minutes north up the Costa Blanca lies this hidden gem laden with cultural delights. Being a Londoner, I expected the price of a 90 minute ride on a state-of-the-art, fully air-coned tram to exceed my budget for both dinner AND a night on the town, but was shocked when the price for two of us to get there and back didn´t even top 10 euros - we got on in Altea, a little further down the line from Benidorm.

Hidden dangers on Benidorm´s Levante beach

Levante beach is one of the reasons why millions of people choose to come to Benidorm on their holidays - understandable with its miles of golden sand. In the busy Summer months the beach is packed with holiday makers - sometimes its a struggle to find a square metre of sand to place your towel! Its shallow waters and gentle slope into the sea make it a favourite with families but a word of caution. Just 20 inches beyond the shoreline lies a mile long stretch of rock mass hidden beneath the water. It is known locally as "El llosar" - the rock.

Tempers were certainly raised on Benidorm beaches yesterday as police tried to calm irate holidaymakers. The Town Hall have received notification from "Costas" – the authority which are responsible for the beaches that they must enforce the 1988 Coastal Act. This states that there must be a 6 metre space between the shore and first line of sunbeds to "reserve this space for the movement of swimmers and emergency services"!
