Aqualandia – Europe´s biggest waterpark opened today, Thursday 1st June for the summer season. After a number of weeks of very unseasonal weather in the resort, with days of thunderstorms usually associated with March or April, everyone breathed a sigh of relief that that sun has finally made a comeback. The beaches were packed, with many British families still here over the school half term taking full advantage.

Well it really is anyone’s guess at the moment as to what each day will bring! There were heavy grey clouds and rain this morning yet come lunchtime, the holidaymakers were out as quickly as the sun – making the most of it… and going by the last week, who can blame them. The promenade was full, the bars were busy and everyone was happy.

The rain in Spain!

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Goodness me…. It is foul yet again! We are certainly not used to this wet weather in Benidorm, especially at the end of MAY. When it rains it really rains here. Holidaymakers are wondering around aimlessly, wearing multi-coloured plastic ponchos or umbrella hats – and the only ones who are really benefitting are the shops selling them!

Many patriotic Brits dressed for the occasion in Red, White and Blue to watch the coronation of King Charles III in Benidorm today. Almost every bar in the Rincon de Loix broadcast the event live on wide screen televisions... and many sat there riveted for the two-hour ceremony. The sun shone – unlike in London and spirits were high, both alcoholic and emotion as they toasted what they realised was a historic event.

One thing that Spain does well is tradition and this weekend (4-7 May) Benidorm has gone back in time to be transformed into the Middle Ages with the arrival of a travelling Medieval Market, attracting plenty of visitors to Parc d’Elx (Dove Park) at the start of the Poniente beach. It goes to many towns across the region and only last weekend in took place in Vilajoyosa. A great place to spend an hour or so if here in the resort - something you probably won´t see back home!

"Elvis Mania" hit Benidorm at the weekend, where a three-day tribute to "The King of Rock n´ Roll" took place. As in previous years, hundreds of Elvis fans flocked here for the “Benidorm Elvis Fiesta”, many travelling specially from the UK – and who could blame them with the spectacular sunny weekend we just had, but many Spanish fans were also present too!

Benidorm´s Easter procession

This evening, Good Friday, saw the climax of the Easter Processions in Benidorm – with all of the brotherhoods from churches in Benidorm taking part. Spain certainly retains its traditions and cultural identity as would have been demonstrated across many towns and cities. The entire route was jam packed with spectators but some of the Brits on holiday were rather taken aback by the startling and to them, sinister looking costumes. However, theydo actually date back to medieval times...

Oh what a craic it has been here...with clear blue skies and temperatures in the 20´s, there was no stopping many taking to the streets of Benidorm today to celebrate St Patrick´s Day. Calle Gerona turned into a sea of green, including many of the shops, who had a roaring trade selling green wigs, t-shirts, tutu´s and hats. Plenty of bars embraced the occasion, with bunting, balloons, shamrocks and flags decorating their terraces.

Well we knew that the unseasonal warm weather couldn´t last and for the last couple of weeks it´s been blowing a gale, with snow even making an appearance inland, in particular around the Murcia region and on the ski slopes of Valdellinares, inland from Valencia. For those that believe it´s always summer-like here then think again – winter has well and truly arrived. The last week has been positively Baltic, especially in the early morning and as soon as the sun goes down – assuming that it has even bothered to make an appearance.Today we had a few hours around lunchtime then the grey clouds rolled in and temperatures quickly dipped.

What an incredible last day of the year it is here – vivid blue sky, sunshine, an abundance of people about on the promenade, what more could we ask. It´s hard to believe we are in December and in a few hours will be welcoming in 2023. The stage is already up on calle Bilbao and giant screens line the Levante promenade, ready to broadcast the countdown to 2023 from Puerta del Sol in Madrid and repeated an hour later from London

What a fabulous day it has been today – no chance of a white Christmas here with a vivid blue sky, sunshine and Spring like temperatures. The Levante promenade was awash with people at lunchtime, many taking a stroll, with a spattering of Santa hats whilst others just enjoyed a drink and were people watching. Those here on holiday probably couldn´t believe their luck how mild the weather is!
